20 Dresses You Can Actually Work Out In (Yes, Really)

Up until a few years ago, the idea of a comfortable and functional dress to work out in probably seemed pretty odd. A dress? For running, biking, HIIT, barre, yoga, etc.? How could that possibly be practical? And how could you move in it without worrying about flashing anyone? And really, they only seemed helpful for tennis.

But plenty of activewear brands have gotten quite clever and have reimagined the idea of a workout dress. Now, many of them these days are sweat-wicking, compressive, have a shorts liner, and are just as good as wearing the old leggings-and–sports-bra combo.

Plus, they're pretty awesome for transitioning from the gym or studio to whatever you have to do for the day. Not to mention that you might even want to wear them when you're not working out and just going about your day. Take a look at some of the best workout dresses below.

Outdoor Voices' Exercise Dress pretty much normalized the idea of wearing dresses for workouts other than tennis or golf. So, of course, we had to add it to the top of the list.

Girlfriend Collective made a dress version of its best-selling sports bra (Paloma). It has compressive fabric so it will support you during medium-impact workouts. There's a built-in unitard with a bra, plus side mesh pockets on the shorts.

Now this just looks like a dress you'd wear out—which makes it perfect for any after-gym activities. It features a sweetheart neckline, built-in shorts and bra, and adjustable straps.

Designed for low-impact workouts, Athleta's racerback dress is made with a buttery-soft, sweat-wicking fabric.

You can wear this tank dress to a variety of workouts, from HIIT classes to hikes. It has an outer layer that stretches while you move and an inner layer (with a shelf bra and shorts) to wick away sweat and hold you in.

This may be labeled a tennis dress, but you can wear it to the gym. It features a removable bra and two side pockets in the undershorts.

Here's another dress that just looks like an everyday style. But it's fully equipped for workouts with four-way stretch and breathable fabric.

This dress was specially designed for running. It's made with weightless fabric and is quick-drying, breathable, stretchy, and contours to your body.

Splits59's dress has slits on each side of the skirt for better movement. It also features a comfortable elastic waistband.

This sleek racerback dress has a flatlock seam design so you don't have to worry about any discomfort or chafing. It has removable cups and a flat side pocket.

With a shelf bra and compressive biker shorts, this dress can be worn during low- to medium-impact workouts. The straps cross at the back for more support and comfort.

Terez's pink tennis dress is so whimsical and ballerina-like, but that doesn't mean it isn't practical. It has built-in shorts and is made from a comfortable fabric.

Made with a ribbed activewear jersey fabric, this dress is just easy breezy. It has built-in shorts and a pocket for your cell phone. Add some accessories, pair it with some sandals, and/or put a jean jacket over it and you'll be ready for your post-workout brunch.

You don't have to worry about being a sweaty mess in this piece. It dries super quickly and wicks away moisture while you work out.

I love that the neckline on this dress is a little bit different than the other strappy options on this list. It features adjustable back straps, a built-in unitard with a bra, and side pockets.

With a collar, this preppy dress will fit the bill at any place that has a specific dress code.

Athleta's semi-fitted dress is designed for medium- to high-impact workouts. The fabric is a lightweight stretchy fabric made from recycled materials.

Looking for something with a lot of breathability? You've got it here. It has a perforated back panel for ventilation.

The strappy back keeps you cool while to top will hold you in. You'll want to wear some bike shorts under this piece for workouts.
