The Founder of This California-Chic Brand Shares Her Restorative Evening Rituals

It's no secret that we love a good morning routine. We've come to learn, however, that the rituals we do to wind down before bed are just as important. Whether you take 10 minutes or a few hours, it's precious time that you have set aside at the end of the day to take care of yourself. Our series Weekend Wind-Down highlights the nightly routines of the people we admire.

Jenni Kayne, the designer and founder of her eponymous lifestyle brand, is synonymous with a breezy and elevated California style. From luxurious wardrobe basics to home décor pieces you’ll love forever, everything from the brand feels like an extension of Kayne’s own life.

Most recently, the lifestyle entrepreneur launched Oak Essentials, a foundational clean skincare line, through which she hopes to continue to inspire people to live well every day. Keep scrolling to see Kayne’s favorite products in her self-care-focused night routine.

Even with our busy schedules, my husband, Richard, and I always prioritize having dinner as a family with our kids Tanner, Ripley, and Trooper. Usually, I make something simple with seasonal veggies and fish—if I’m searching for inspiration, I’ll revisit some of the recipes in my book, Pacific Natural

Around this time, I’ll take our two dogs for a walk around the neighborhood or let them run in our yard. Even if it’s just for five or 10 minutes, I love getting some fresh air before I start getting ready for bed. Then it’s time to get all my kids ready for bed.

Once my kids are asleep, I’ll change into pj's and head to my bathroom to begin my favorite part of the evening: my skincare routine. I always start with the Cleansing Balm from Oak Essentials. We launched the brand back in August, and I’m in love with everything—the entire collection is clean, nourishing, and ultra hydrating. This balm is such a luxurious way to start winding down.

Once I’ve cleansed my face, I use the Oak Essentials Balancing Mist. I learned years ago that your skin should be damp before applying other products, so this mist is a must in my routine—plus, the scent is so relaxing. Next up are my serums, plus the Ritual Oil and Moisture Rich Balm

While my products sink in, I go make myself a cup of tea. I really love tulsi tea during these cooler months. It’s great for relieving stress and enhancing immunity, and the flavor is perfect for fall.

Once my tea is ready, it’s back to the bathroom to finish off my skincare routine. One of my favorite skincare tools is my gua sha stone. I’ll spend a few minutes on each side of my face to help with lymphatic drainage and to release tension.

To make sure I’m relaxed and ready for bed, I like to use my Chi Palm. It aids in circulation and helps reduce inflammation, which is something I definitely need after a long day.

By now, I’m usually (or hopefully) getting settled in my bedroom. I make sure to fill a carafe of water to keep on my nightstand, and I’ll even light a candle for some dim light. I really like to limit screen time before bed, so I’ll try to meditate or read, but that’s always easier said than done.
