How This Fitness Instructor and Founder Gets Ready to Teach a Morning Class

What's the first thing you do when you get out of bed in the morning? A well-rounded morning routine sets the tone for the day and gets you prepped—both mentally and physically—before you dive into a packed schedule filled with emails, chores, happy hours, workouts, and more. Our series Morning Person profiles those who have mastered the art of the morning routine.

Tune in every week here and on our Instagram to learn exactly how the pros get it all done before the sun comes up, from their go-to breakfasts to their a.m. workouts.

Lia Bartha is on the verge of becoming a household name in fitness. Her popular workout program B the Method combines thoughtful low-impact and energizing movements that not only helps to strengthen but also protect your entire body. Since creating the program in 2018, Bartha has become the go-to trainer for celebrity clients like Aubrey Plaza, Martha Hunt, and Ashley Tisdale.

From her game-changing cold brew concoction to dropping her daughters off at school, Bartha walks us through everything she does before teaching the first class of the day. Keep scrolling to see the fitness founder’s self-care-focused morning routine.

6:30 A.M.

My human alarm clock (a.k.a. my 5-year-old younger daughter, Ruby) comes tapping at my shoulder to let me know it’s time to wake up and get ready for the day. By the way, her actual alarm clock goes off at 6:40 a.m., but she proudly wakes up before, unlike my older daughter, Asa, who enjoys sleeping until the very last second.

I'll pour a huge glass of water and drink its entirety before moving on to caffeine. I often want to skip this part but our B the Method community has committed to keeping each other hydrated and this step has been super helpful.

Then, I'll take down a packet of Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C with a shot of water and Seed Daily Synbiotic for my gut. Daily gut and digestive health are super important to my overall mood, so I never skip this step. It’s a non-negotiable in the morning, as is a quiet moment to myself in the bathroom, if you know what I mean.

Caffeine time. My go-to drink for all seasons is what I like to call, an iced coco-oat cold brew. It is half-part cold brew concentrate (I’ve been loving Grady’s French Vanilla Cold Brew), one-fourth coconut water (Harmless Harvest tastes the best in my opinion), one-eighth water, and the rest is oat milk and ice. This is a game-changing concoction, trust me.

I’m usually sipping on my drink while making breakfast for the girls, running around the house and saying, "Eat your food, go brush your teeth, find your socks.” You get the drift.

We'll hustle out the door as a family and walk to school. It’s about a mile away, so we get a nice amount of fresh air and conversation on the way. This is one of my favorite moments of the week.

After drop-off, I'll get back home and start getting ready for the rest of the morning.

Today, I’m teaching a livestream class, so I'll take the next half hour to leisurely get ready, listen to music (Robyn is on rotation right now) and run through exercise sequences in my head.

My routine always starts with Furtuna Skin Face and Eye serum, plus their Biphase Moisturizing Oil evenly massaged over my face and neck.

Next, I'll spend about five minutes using my Solawave Infrared Wand around my eyes, cheeks, and forehead to de-puff and refresh. It also gives me a really amazing therapeutic facial massage at the same time, which is my current obsession. I'll put on a little makeup, spray my roots with Vivi Naturals Root 66 Hair Serum, and throw my hair into a high ponytail.

I'll grab a light bite, which usually consists of some fruit and nuts, a banana with nut butter (Ground Up is so good), or some White Mustache Date Yogurt and I’ll eat while picking out some workout clothes for class. My go-to's are onesies by Free People Movement, plus any slouchy knit socks.

When I'm ready for class, I'll focus on setting up my room and studio. All of my live classes and filming takes place at my home in Brooklyn, so it’s an easy commute.

9:25 A.M.

Finally, I'm going live on the B the Method platform. The first five minutes before class is a chance for our community to ask questions, chat about anything (literally everything), and welcome each other just as we would do in person.

Today, we are doing a mat cardio class, focusing on full-body movements and deep core strength. This new category on the platform has quickly become a subscriber favorite because it’s holistic but challenging and gets your inner heat going full blast. I hope to see you soon in class!
