As editors, it’s our job (and an incredible perk) to keep up-to-date with the newest and coolest brands and product launches so that we can thoroughly vet them and let you know what’s the cream of the crop in all things beauty and wellness. One of the highly anticipated haircare brands on our radar this year is Bread Beauty Supply, the Black-owned curl care line, which made its debut exclusively at Sephora earlier this summer.

The mastermind behind this buzzy new brand is founder and CEO Maeva Heim, who is currently based in Melbourne, Australia. Through Bread, Heim is able to create clean and safe staple haircare products that are accessible to women, especially Black women, with curly and textured hair.

And in between managing her team in the U.S. and training seeing eye dogs, Heim manages to give time back to herself for self-care each day. Keep scrolling to see what a typical workday morning is like for her in Melbourne.

I’ve never been a morning person. I’ve struggled with it my entire life. My brain usually switches on around midnight, which isn’t usually very practical.

The only thing that has helped me make the transition to early riser was getting a puppy! Technically not a forever puppy, but my partner and I raise seeing eye dogs in training. Sometimes, we have a few in the house for a couple of days or weeks at a time—from puppies through to adult labradors—but more often than not, we just have one that’s with us full-time from 8 weeks old until about 18 months old.

Our current full-time girl is called Ukari, who's now 6 months old and insists on breakfast by 7 a.m. at the very latest. She’s my only effective alarm clock!

By this point, I’ve started my day! I’ll do a quick beauty routine (cleanse face, brush teeth, refresh hair, quick makeup) before getting stuck in video calls.

For a gentle, nondrying cleanse, I'll wash my face with Go-To's Fancy Face Cleanser ($34) then use a thin layer of Topicals' Like Butter Hydrating Mask ($32) as a face cream. To seal it all in, I'll use Fluff's Face Oil #1 ($24), which is an Australian brand I've been loving. And of course, no routine is complete without Bread's Hair Oil ($24) to refresh and soften my hair.

I’m currently stuck in Melbourne, Australia, while the majority of business and brand activity for Bread is happening in the U.S. I have a short window of time in the morning to catch up on Zoom with my team, vendors, brand partners, investors, etc., who are mostly in L.A. and NY.

You’re probably wondering where breakfast fits in here. Well, it doesn’t. I’m not a breakfast eater, which is terrible but true.

After a flurry of calls, I’ll jump in the shower and slip on some "workwear” (read: quarantine-appropriate loungewear). Sometimes, I’ll slip on a set of sweats or comfortable loungewear.

I have a ton of vintage knit jumpers, which tend to be my go-to, but I’ve also been acquiring some new loungewear, given the lockdown situation we find ourselves in.

If I haven’t had a coffee yet, I’ll take a quick break to get thoroughly caffeinated. Usually, if I didn’t have time to make my own coffee earlier, my partner has a coffee ready for me by now! Melbourne is one of the coffee capitals of the world, so we grind our beans fresh, partly because it’s delicious but partly because we’d be kicked out of the city otherwise. We love you Melbourne!

If it’s a sunny day, we’ll have coffee in the courtyard. If I’m lucky and it’s not raining, we might have the fire going to keep us warm.

Arguably my favorite part of the day—dog walking time! Okay, no arguments here, this is definitely my favorite. Melbourne lockdown means we’re not able to exercise outside for more than an hour per day, so this is where I like to get that hour in.

Sometimes, we’ll take a stroll around the neighborhood, but if it’s a nice day, we’ll head to the dog-friendly beach. Melbourne has some incredible and well-known surf beaches, like Bells Beach along the Great Ocean Road.

Right now, we’re only allowed to stay within five kilometers of our home, so we’re at the local dog beach, which is the most surreal dog-filled, clear-water paradise during the summer months.

It’s werkin' time! Today, the most pressing thing to get through is actually something I love. I’ve always been a maker at heart, so I'll always jump at the opportunity to do something that involves making it with hands!

I just received some cute fabric samples, so I’m going to jump on the sewing machine and make some Bread-Puff samples to see if we want to put these into production. Bread-Puffs are our brand scrunchies.

Once I’m done, I’m back on the computer. I kick off my solid time working on whatever Bread-related things have been thrown at me for the day. This could be anything from content and product planning to logistics and operations or product ideation and development (the fun stuff!).
